Do you ever feel like part of you wants to speak up… and another part shuts it down?

You feel the words forming…and then, something shifts.

You hesitate, go quiet, and tell yourself it’s not worth it.

Later, you replay the moment, wondering why you didn’t just say the thing.

Moments like this — when one part of you wants to speak and another steps in to hold you back — can feel confusing.

Many individuals across Portland, Milwaukie, Lake Oswego, and West Linn come to therapy feeling caught in that same internal push-and-pull — not because something is wrong with them, but because different parts of them are trying to help in different ways.

These parts aren’t random — they’re shaped by your experiences, and often develop to protect you or help you navigate difficult situations.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy offers a way to understand those moments – and your different parts – with more clarity and less self-judgment.

Instead of pushing reactions away, IFS helps you understand where they come from, what they’re trying to do, and why they show up the way they do.

Over time, that understanding can help you feel clearer, less conflicted, and more grounded in your day-to-day life.

IFS Therapy FAQs

What is IFS therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapy model that helps you understand your inner world through the lens of “parts.”

According to the IFS Institute, “IFS helps people access their undamaged, compassionate Self, which knows how to heal, and from that inner leadership, understand and transform their parts, fostering both inner and outer connectedness.”

In IFS, each part has a role. Some are protective, some are reactive, and some carry deeper pain or past experiences. These aren’t just personality traits; they are responses shaped by what you’ve lived through.

At Willamette Wellness Center in Milwaukie, OR, therapists approach IFS as a respectful, curious, and non-judgmental way of working with yourself. Rather than trying to “fix” parts of you, the goal is to understand your parts and relate to them differently.

If you’ve thought, “Part of me wants to move forward, but another part feels stuck,” you’re already describing how IFS works.

In therapy, we explore these parts together, recognizing that all parts have positive intentions — even if their strategies aren’t as helpful as they once were.

What does IFS therapy feel like?

IFS therapy is intended to feel grounded, collaborative, and safe.

Rather than overriding your reactions, IFS sessions focus on slowing down and understanding what’s happening inside of you. You’d explore what feels reactive, what feels protective, and what’s asking for attention.

At our Milwaukie therapy office serving the greater Portland metro, we create space for you to explore experiences that may feel difficult to untangle on your own, without pressure to “figure it out” quickly.

As IFS therapist Clarisse McLeod often explains:

“IFS allows all our parts to be valid. Even if we don’t agree with them, they’re all trying to help us with something.”

For many people, there’s a sense of relief in realizing that their reactions aren’t random. When you begin to understand the parts behind them, long-standing patterns can start to make more sense.

Is IFS therapy right for me?

Many people come to IFS because they feel caught in an internal push-and-pull, notice different parts of themselves responding in different ways, and want to understand better what’s happening beneath the surface.

IFS offers a way to explore those experiences with curiosity rather than judgment, helping you understand how your responses have been shaped and how they relate to your current life.

It may not be the first step if you’re currently in crisis or don’t yet feel stable enough to explore deeper emotional work.

In those cases, the focus is first on building safety and support. This list of mental health crisis resources may help.

Can IFS help with anxiety, depression, or trauma?

IFS is often used to help people understand how emotional responses connect to past experiences.

Rather than treating anxiety or trauma responses as something to eliminate, IFS helps you understand the parts of you that carry those reactions, and how they’ve been trying to keep you safe.

This creates a more complete picture of what’s happening internally. Over time, that awareness can support a greater sense of clarity and internal balance.

Can IFS help with relationships?

Yes, and this is an area where IFS can be especially impactful.

At Willamette Wellness Center, therapists like Clarisse integrate IFS with mindfulness and a strong relational lens to support couples, families, and individuals.

Instead of focusing on who’s right or wrong, IFS couples therapy centers on understanding what’s happening internally for each person in the moment.

Clarisse often reframes conflict in a way that immediately changes how people experience it:

“Conflict isn’t always a problem to fix. It can be a compass — pointing us toward what still needs healing, or what really matters.”

For many couples in the Portland metro area, this creates a meaningful shift. Conversations that once felt stuck or repetitive begin to open up, with more space for empathy, understanding, and connection.

Who can benefit from IFS therapy?

IFS therapy supports individuals, couples, and families across Portland, Milwaukie, and throughout Oregon and Washington via telehealth.

Many people come to IFS because something feels stuck, even if they can’t fully explain why.

You might notice patterns that repeat, reactions that feel stronger than expected, or moments where different parts of you seem to be pulling in different directions.

IFS offers a way to better understand those experiences by exploring how your thoughts, emotions, and reactions are connected — and how they relate to your life today.

You don’t need a specific diagnosis or a single defining event to benefit. For many people, it simply starts with the sense that something isn’t quite working the way they want it to.

Does insurance cover IFS therapy?

Yes, IFS therapy is covered by insurance in Oregon and Washington.

At Willamette Wellness Center, we work with plans including Kaiser, Moda Health, Aetna, Regence BlueCross BlueShield, and Providence.

We also understand that navigating insurance can feel overwhelming. That’s why we handle it for you.

When you fill out the new client form, our team will check your benefits, explain your coverage, and walk you through what to expect before therapy begins — so you don’t have to manage it on your own.

As Arin Wallington, CEO of Willamette Wellness Center, shared:

“Mental health care needs to be accessible, clear, and human. People shouldn’t have to fight systems or navigate confusion—especially around insurance—to get support.”

Where is your clinic located?

We offer in-person IFS therapy at our Milwaukie, OR, clinic, serving clients across Portland, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Happy Valley, and surrounding communities.

Our clinic was designed from the ground up to feel calm, welcoming, and supportive, so you can focus on the work that matters. The building has convenient on-site parking and is ADA-compliant, with an elevator and accessible restrooms.

Is virtual (online) IFS therapy available, and does insurance cover it?

Yes. IFS therapy is available virtually through secure telehealth across Oregon and Washington.

When sessions are delivered via telehealth by licensed therapists, online IFS therapy is covered by insurance the same way in-person care is.

What qualifications do your clinicians have for IFS therapy?

Our clinicians are Master’s-level therapists with specialized training in Internal Family Systems (IFS).

They work with individuals, couples, and families, and approach therapy with curiosity, collaboration, and respect for your pace.

What does working together look like?

We begin by getting to know you — your experiences, your goals, and what feels most important to you right now.

From there, the work unfolds gradually. You might start by noticing moments of awareness or new understanding, and build from there at a pace that feels right for you.

Nothing is rushed or forced. The process is guided by your readiness and supported at every step.
