What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is a structured, evidence-based approach designed to help the brain fully process and heal from traumatic experiences, anxiety, and other emotional challenges. It creates a safe, supportive space where you can explore difficult experiences, while staying present and grounded. And without being overwhelmed by the memory.

People who have experienced trauma notice it showing up differently — in their thoughts, emotions, reactions, and even their bodies. After a painful life event, you can feel like you’re stuck in a constant loop -reliving that event, getting pulled back by painful triggers, and having the same emotional and physical response.

After awhile, it may even start to feel like your “new normal.” But change is possible.

How EMDR Therapy Works

When we experience trauma, our brain doesn’t always fully process it, and memories can feel “stuck,” resurfacing as flashbacks, anxiety, or even physical symptoms. EMDR gently guides your brain to reprocess these memories so they no longer carry the same weight or intensity.

During a session, you’ll work closely with a trained EMDR therapist moving at your pace as you recall the memory in small, manageable steps using guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to ease the process.

Who EMDR Therapy Helps (And When it May Be a Good Fit)

You don’t need a specific diagnosis to benefit.

Trauma isn’t typically a one-and-done matter — it often shows up over time. Its effects can range anywhere from complex PTSD to ongoing stress, anxiety, and depression. These responses deserve understanding and validation — not avoidance — which is EMDR therapy can offer a focused, effective way to address what you’re carrying.

Our EMDR counselors are Master’s-Level counselors with specialized, advanced training in EMDR. We’re here to help anyone seeking a deeper, effective way to understand and heal their experiences.

EMDR can be effective for various issues, including:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Anxiety and phobias
  • Depression
  • Grief and loss
  • Childhood trauma
  • Self-esteem issues
