The Harmful Shift Away from DEI — and The Impacts on Mental Health

As we step into the new year, we are witnessing a troubling shift— one that threatens to undo years of progress toward equity and inclusion. The rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives is not just a political or corporate decision; it is a move that affects the well-being of individuals and communities on a profound level. From job layoffs, university admissions and the elimination of women and transgender individuals from the military, to the dismissal of 504 school programs for children (outlines accommodations and supports provided to students with disabilities, ensuring equal access to education) at school, access to opportunity is shrinking — leaving many feeling unseen and unheard.
At Willamette Wellness Center, we recognize and support all people. As a trauma-informed mental health practice, we understand that factors like race, ethnicity, gender identity, geographic location, and past experiences play a critical role in shaping mental health. The elimination of DEI policies in workplaces, educational institutions and even the military doesn’t just impact those directly affected, it creates a ripple effect that erodes support systems, deepens social divides and fosters environments where discrimination and bias can thrive unchecked.
Why This Matters to All of Us
The move away from DEI harms more than just marginalized groups. When opportunities shrink for some, society as a whole suffers. Studies show that diverse and inclusive workplaces foster innovation, increase economic growth and improve mental well-being for all employees. In schools, diversity efforts create richer learning environments, benefiting students of all backgrounds. Even within mental health care, inclusivity ensures that more people receive affirming, culturally competent support — something that is now at risk as funding and policies shift away from DEI.
The mental health impact of these changes cannot be ignored. Many people are experiencing increased stress, anxiety, and feelings of isolation as they navigate workplaces, schools and communities that may no longer prioritize equity. At Willamette Wellness Center, we remain committed to fostering a safe, affirming space for all individuals, regardless of the larger societal shifts taking place.
